RESTON, VA, March 25, 2013 – Building upon the launch of First Lady Michelle Obama's new Let's Move! Active Schools initiative, White House Assistant Chef and Executive Director of Let's Move! Sam Kass, will address physical education teachers from around the country at the 128th National Convention and Expo of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) in Charlotte, NC on April 25.
More than 5,000 physical education teachers, coaches and other physical activity professionals are expected to attend the largest gathering of physical education teachers in the country. Joining Kass at the General Session of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) will be Shellie Pfohl, executive director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, who will speak about the new Presidential Youth Fitness Program."NASPE/AAHPERD is proud and excited to be a part of First Lady Michelle Obama's newly released Let's Move! Active Schools - an unprecedented collaboration to bring physical activity back to American schools," says NASPE President Mary Jo Sariscsany, associate professor at California State University-Northridge. "Now we are thrilled that Sam Kass will join us in Charlotte to talk about how the whole country is coming together to increase students' physical activity before, during and after the school day."
Let's Move! Active Schools is an unprecedented collaboration of organizations across sectors that are stepping up to help all of America's students lead active, healthy lifestyles. The new initiative provides simple steps and tools, including monetary support and training, to help schools create active environments where students get 60 minutes of daily physical activity. The initiative mobilizes "School Champions" – P.E. teachers, classroom teachers, administrators, staff, and even parents – who are ready and willing to be leaders for their school community. These champions will go to the Let's Move! Active Schools website and follow a six-step process that includes building a team, conducting a basic school assessment, and creating a customized action plan. Participating schools will have access to free tools and resources, ranging from in-person trainings, to program activation grants to direct, personal assistance from certified professionals.
A Chicago native, Kass graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in U.S. History. In 2009, Kass joined the White House Kitchen staff under Executive Chef Cris Comerford's leadership as Assistant Chef and, in 2010, became the Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives. Kass was recently named Executive Director of Let's Move!,which celebrated its third anniversary in February.
Kass has a long interest in sustainable and nutritious ingredients and helped First Lady Michelle Obama create the first vegetable garden at the White house since Eleanor Roosevelt's Victory Garden. To date, the garden has yielded nearly 3,000 pounds of produce that has been used to feed event guests, staff and the First Family at the White House with further harvest donated to local food shelters.
