National Adapted Physical Education, Dance, & Health Education Teachers of the Year Named
RESTON, VA, May 15, 2013 – Honoring the elite of the adapted physical education, dance and health professions, the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) announced the recipients of the National Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year, National K-12 Dance Educator of the Year and College University National Dance Educator of the Year, and the Health Education Professional of the Year School K-12 Awards during the 128th annual AAHPERD National Convention & Expo in Charlotte last month. The 2013 national award winners are:
Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year — Brad Weiner, Eastern District, Frances Fuchs Early Childhood Center, MD
K-12 Dance Educator of the Year — Stacy Shayne, Southwest District, Boulder Creek High School, AZ
College University Dance Educator of the Year — Kristi Johnson, Southern District, Jacksonville University, FL
Health Education Professional of the Year School K-12 — Deanna Castelvecchi, Southern District, Elizabeth Davis Middle School, VA
The National Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award is given in recognition of outstanding teaching performance in adapted physical education and the ability to motivate today's youth to participate in a lifetime of physical activity. The award was presented during the annual Adapted Physical Activity Council Claudine Sherrill Awards Breakfast. The special breakfast banquet is sponsored by Claudine Sherrill, a pillar in the adapted physical education community.
The national dance awards recognize effective teaching methods that inspire students towards a comprehensive appreciation for dance as a performing art and lifestyle. The dance awards were given at the Social and Dance Educator of the Year ceremony during AAHPERD's convention.
The national health education award is given to an individual who has made substantial contributions as a practitioner in the school K-12 setting.
AAHPERD also announced its National Elementary, Middle School and High School Physical Education Teachers of the Year at its Charlotte convention.
