FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
NJ Physical Educators' Association Celebrates Let's Move! Active Schools at Ridgewood Fourth of July Parade
RESTON, VA, July 1, 2013, At the upcoming 103rd Annual Ridgewood, NJ Fourth of July Celebration and Parade, New Jersey Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NJAHPERD) and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) will host a float inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama's recently launched Let's Move! Active Schools (LMAS) initiative. This is the 95-year old organization's first time participating in the Ridgewood Fourth of July parade.
Celebrating this year's parade theme of "Honoring our Declaration of Independence," JoAnn Doherty, NJAHPERD President, could think of no better way to celebrate the rights of "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" than being a LMAS champion with a "moving" float. "We are proud and excited to advocate for quality health, physical education, fitness and physical activity with our national partner AAHPERD," she added. The parade begins at 10 a.m. rain or shine at George Washington School on Godwin Avenue, goes down to East Ridgewood Avenue to Maple Avenue and ends at Graydon Pool.
Between 25,000 and 50,000 people from all over the world are expected to attend the parade. The LMAS inspired float will also include: Susan Toth, Tenafly Middle School, with "Drums Alive;" Barbara Brady, Linden High School with the "Linden High School – Dance Club" and Jim Ross, Orchard Elementary School, with the "Jumpers." Doherty is hoping that all of our members, family and friends in the area will come out and support our champions.
Let's Move! Active Schools is a comprehensive program that empowers school champions (physical education teachers, classroom teachers, principals, administrators and parents) to create physically active school environments that enable all students to get moving and reach their full potential. The program provides simple steps and tools, including monetary support and training, to help schools create active environments where students get 60 minutes of daily physical activity through quality physical education and physical activity before, during and after the school day.
As a managing organization for Let's Move! Active Schools, AAHPERD is recruiting individual champions, provide customized support to schools, and facilitate the training of at least 20,000 school Physical Activity Leaders over the next five years. According to AAHPERD Chief Executive Officer E. Paul Roetert, "Physical educators have always known that children are designed to move. Now through Let's Move! Active Schools, we are thrilled to elevate our efforts in increasing physical activity before, during and after school to a larger national stage. The Ridgewood Fourth of July Parade is a great way to showcase physical activity and how we want it to become an integral part of everyone's daily lives."
