America'a Most Decorated Gymnast Shannon Miller To Keynote General Session at AAHPERD Convention & Expo in St. Louis
April 1-5, 2014
RESTON, VA, OCTOBER 7, 2013–The most decorated American gymnast in U.S. history, seven-time Olympic Medalist Shannon Miller, will keynote the General Session on Wednesday, April 2, at the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (AAHPERD) National Convention & Expo in St. Louis, MO, the organization announced today.
POLAR, a longtime AAHPERD partner and the leader in heart rate monitoring and fitness assessment technologies, will be the official sponsor of the General Session. Through Miller's partnership with Polar, she will highlight how physical educators across the country are incorporating technologies into their physical education programs to objectively evaluate students on their individual efforts as well as motivate them to be physically active.
"AAHPERD embraces the role technology holds in developing vibrant, innovative P.E. and school-based health programs. We are very much looking forward to connecting with Shannon on this issue and hearing her perspective as a professional athlete , advocate for promoting a healthy, balanced lifestyle and as a parent," says AAHPERD President Gale Wiedow of Dakota State University in South Dakota. "Shannon will be an extraordinary keynote speaker for our members to hear from and be inspired by."
Miller is no stranger to AAHPERD. In 2010, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE/AAHPERD) inducted Miller into its Hall of Fame. Each year, the Hall of Fame recognizes those who have achieved new levels of excellence in sport, physical education and physical activity and inspired others by their example of what these quality programs can do to make a better world. Miller joined an elite class of inductees including University of Tennessee Women's Basketball Coach Pat Summitt, tennis greats Billie Jean King and the late Arthur Ashe, fellow Olympians Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses and Nancy Hogshead, golf legend Annika Sorenstam, among others.
Miller is the president of both Shannon Miller Lifestyle: Health and Fitness for Women, which supports her online fitness tracking Shannon Miller Walk-Fit program, and the Shannon Miller Foundation, her non-profit dedicated to fighting childhood obesity. She also serves as a TV personality appearing on MSNBC, NBC, Comcast and Yahoo! Sports, and has authored multiple books and videos on fitness and health. She will now take on a new role through her new partnership with Polar, to help raise awareness and educate families about the benefits of measuring physical activity to improve long-term health and fitness levels.
She holds a BBA in marketing and entrepreneurship from the University of Houston and a J.D. from Boston College.
