A National Study of Nonrenewal in High School Coaching
Glenn A. Miller, Rafer Lutz, Jaeho Shim, Karen Fredenburg, & John Miller
Abstract:
Little is known about dismissals in the high school coaching arena. Some research indicates that school boards and administrators dismiss an average of one in ten coaches annually. As educators who prepare future coaches and teachers, we strive to properly equip individuals pursuing this vocation by providing educational experiences that enhance coaching longevity and job security. Since sports play such a prominent role in our culture, investigation into this area would appear warranted. Therefore, high school principals and coaches were surveyed about the various pressures coaches face, reasons for dismissals, and from which sport coaches are most frequently dismissed. This study provides information that may give guidance to programs that prepare those who are pursuing a career in coaching or teaching.
