An Integrated Approach to an Undergraduate Kinesiology Curriculum: A Case Study About Stalling in Wrestling
Kevin P. Ward & R. Scott Kretchmar
Abstract:
Kinesiology is a broad field that draws from numerous domains, including biomechanics, physiology, psychology, and philosophy. Professors from each specialty emphasize discipline-specific content, which results in a lack of cross-disciplinary integration. Consequently, kinesiology undergraduates are exposed to coursework in various disciplines, but it is difficult for them to master and integrate all the disjointed pieces of the kinesiology “puzzle.” The disconnectedness of the academic undergraduate experience can be demonstrated by attempting to apply information from each discipline to any common sport phenomenon. This article shows how the various domains of kinesiology can be used to explain the controversial tactic of stalling in the sport of wrestling.
