Bicycle Safety: Sport Education Style
Oleg Sinelnikov, Peter Hastie, Amy Cole, & Deanna Schneulle
Abstract:
This article describes a bicycle safety curriculum grounded in the sport education model. The curriculum consists of 15 lessons taught to fourth-grade students in Alabama. All features of a sport education season—affiliation, formal competition, culminating events, record keeping, and festivity—were preserved. The four distinct team roles in each team included team captain, equipment manager, first judge, and safety manager. There were three different phases in the curriculum over the course of the unit, each culminating with a competition: Bicycle Inspection & Hand Signals, Bicycle Skill Control, and Synchronized Team Bicycle Ride. At the end of the unit, the festive culminating event included an awards ceremony, free rides, and students watching the videotaped synchronized team bicycle routines. In addition, the article includes teachers’ reactions to conducting the unit, as well as general recommendations for implementing the sport education bicycle-safety curriculum.
