Body Image in the Dance Class
Wendy Oliver
Abstract:
Although some research has shown that dance enhances body image and self-esteem, other research shows that it sometimes has the opposite effect and causes dancers to develop a negative body image and even eating disorders. In dance, body image is not only about maintaining a certain weight; it can also refer to specific perceived body flaws. Dancers are usually expected to be slim, well-proportioned, and toned and they are put under a great deal of pressure to maintain these traits. This article discusses the various aspects of the dance class that can potentially lead to a negative body image and how dance educators can address these issues in order to enhance their students’ body image.
