Choosing Appropriate Assessments
Lynn V. Johnson
Abstract:
This article focuses on the criteria that physical educators can use when selecting student assessments from the many available outside sources, including professional journals, books, and web sites. Physical educators need to review each assessment with the eye of a critical consumer. The criteria presented are intended to provide the physical educator with a guide to the selection process. The article discusses the following criteria: does the assessment assess the intended performance outcome, is the assessment developmentally appropriate, are there identified criteria for success, is the assessment a part of the learning task, and does the assessment allow the teacher to assess in a practical way?
