Coaches Under Pressure: Four Decades of Studies
Edgar Scantling & Donald Lackey
Abstract:
This is the fourth in a series of studies spanning four decades that investigates the extent, source, and outcome of pressure on high school coaches in Nebraska. Investigation occurred from the 1970s to 2000, and during each decade it was revealed that coaches were dismissed at a high percentage rate. Given reasons included poor coach-student relationships, unacceptable game records, and parent pressure. During all four decades, the four major team sports in Nebraska (girls basketball, boys basketball, girls volleyball, football) led in coaching dismissals. It was concluded that coaching continues to be a very fragile profession with coaches continuing to be at the mercy of various interested parties.
