Collaborating with Classroom Teachers to Increase Daily Physical Activity: The GEAR Program

Abstract:
The priorities in education continue to be on the development of the mind, often to the detriment of the body. A balance between both entities appears to be a logical goal since both are needed and used throughout one’s lifetime. This article discusses the use of GEAR (Getting Energized and Recharged) activities at one school. These are physical activities that are easy to use, take a minimal amount of time, require little or no training, and can be performed inside or outside the classroom. The infusion of short bouts of physical activity can certainly help children. Research suggests that physical activity enhances academic performance. Physical education class once a week can only do so much with regard to the promotion of physical activity and the development of fitness and motor skills. With some help and guidance, classroom teachers can become valuable partners in activity promotion and, in many cases, are more than willing to infuse short bouts of physical activity into their day. Witnessing the effects will be rewarding for both students and teachers.
