Cooperative Learning that Includes Students with Disabilities
Michelle Grenier, Ben Dyson, & Pat Yeaton
Abstract:
Cooperative learning can be both reciprocal and inclusive, offering students the opportunity to be contributing members of the learning community by providing a safe environment for students of all abilities. Whether a child is identified as “typical,” “at-risk," or “gifted,” cooperative learning encourages respect and learning between peers. This article depicts a classroom scenario in cooperative learning that includes a student with cerebral palsy. Several keys to implementing cooperative learning are described, including planning, assessment, and problem-solving skills. Although implementation may be time-consuming and require practice, the use of cooperative learning helps all students attain social, cognitive, and physical skill development.
