Developing Listening Bodies in the Dance Technique Class
Rebecca Enghauser
Abstract:
This article provides a practical framework for infusing a body-listening or somatic approach into the dance class. Although the concept of body listening is not revolutionary or ground breaking, it has been underemphasized in the dance technique class and needs revisiting. From reflection on current research, as well as from several years of observation, the author has constructed a pedagogical structure for infusing a somatic component into the contemporary modern dance technique class. This structure consists of five body-listening categories of somatic exploration. The five categories are (1) spatial-perceptual, (2) kinesthetic, (3) breath, (4) eco-somatic, and (5) creative listening, and this article includes classroom applications of each of them.
