Dismissals and Perceptions of Pressure in Coaching in Texas High Schools
Glenn Miller, Rafer Lutz, Jaeho Shim, Karen Fredenburg, & John Miller
Abstract:
Little is known about dismissals in the high school coaching arena, aside from the four decades of study spearheaded by Lackey (see above). As educators who prepare future coaches/teachers, we are charged with properly equipping individuals pursuing this often pressure-packed vocation by providing educational experiences that enhance coaching longevity and job security. Despite many questions, scant literature is directed toward the coaching career. With sport playing such a prominent role in our culture, investigation into this area appears warranted. Therefore, high school principals and coaches were surveyed about the pressures coaches face, reasons for dismissals, and from what sport coaches are most frequently dismissed. This study will provide information that may give guidance to programs that prepare those entering coaching/teaching.
