Focus and Folk Knowledge
Dan Landers & Scott Kretchmar
Abstract:
Content misalignment is not the central problem in the preparation of future physical education teachers, but rather the misfocus of the profession. The focus in the curriculum should be expanded from its current concentration on health benefits to a more expansive list of outcomes, including cognitive functioning. This article highlights this most important extrinsic benefit of physical activity, which can strengthen the position of physical education in school. The article also discusses the challenge of translating scientific facts into practical application and the important role that “folk knowledge” plays in the teaching environment.
