Geocaching: 21st-Century Hide-and-Seek
Barbara Elwood Schlatter & Amy R. Hurd
Abstract:
Geocaching has gained huge popularity in recent years, and it is viewed in various ways by participants—as a sport, hobby, or game, or as high-tech treasure hunting. In this outdoor activity, participants use a GPS receiver to guide them to “treasure” caches listed on the Internet. This article gives a brief history of geocaching and covers the necessary equipment and steps to do it. Safety precautions, geocaching etiquette, and management concerns are discussed. Programmatic strategies provide guidance for starting a class so that more people can learn the fun of geocaching. Useful web resources are also provided.
