Gymnastics and Movement Instruction: Fighting the Decline in Motor Fitness

Abstract: Historically, gymnastics has served an essential role in physical education and the development of physical fitness. Participating in gymnastics-related activities can improve the physical and motor fitness of children of all ages and can make significant contributions to the goals of physical education. This article describes the importance of gymnastics as a way to improve children’s motor fitness. Physical education teachers should be willing to explore and utilize a wide array of resources, instructional strategies, and assessment techniques to offer a complete, developmentally appropriate gymnastics and movement program for students of all ages.
