Health and the Power of Dance
Sheila A. Ward
Abstract:
Dancing is a health-promoting physical activity that many people can enjoy throughout life. In addition to reducing the health risks associated with overweight and obesity, dance has been used as a healing tool for other health problems. Understanding the power of dance for health and healing has become important for the prevention, management, and treatment of various health conditions, including chronic diseases, mental illnesses, and physical disabilities. This article discusses existing evidence-based research and programs that have used dance to address health issues in a variety of disciplines and settings, and how dance majors, professional dancers, and dance educators may be able to introduce dance into their community to promote health and wellness.
