Helping the Struggling PETE Candidate: A Model of Intervention and Assistance
Tracy L. Pellett & Heidi A. Henschel Pellett
Abstract:
The topic of effective teacher preparation, improved teacher quality, and higher academic learning and performance from teacher candidates has provoked major discussion at the national and state levels during recent years. Current research shows that as many as five to 15 percent of the 2.7 million teachers in public school classrooms perform at incompetent levels. One way to avoid ill-prepared teachers is to start with teacher education programs. This article looks at these programs and suggests various ways that they can be more proactive in ensuring that only well-prepared teachers enter the classroom.
