How SAFE Are School and Park Playgrounds?
Susan D. Hudson, Donna Thompson, & Heather Olsen
Abstract:
Since the 1980s, groups such as the American Association for Leisure and Recreation’s Committee on Play have worked to help make America’s playgrounds safe. Have these efforts paid off? A 2000 report card by the National Program for Playground Safety gave the nation’s playgrounds a grade of C for safety. In 2003, NPPS revisited these playgrounds to see if any progress had been made. This article details the 2004 safety grade received by the nation’s school and park playgrounds. Specific areas looked at include supervision, age-appropriate design, fall surfacing, and equipment maintenance.
