Abstract:
In response to the dramatic increase in childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes, legislators took action by mandating that all school districts with federally funded school meal programs develop and implement wellness policies. These policies were introduced at the beginning of the 2006-07 school year in the hope of positively influencing students’ health. School wellness policies also represent an ideal opportunity for physical educators to assume a leadership role in their school by steering the implementation of the policies within physical education class, across the school curriculum, and into the community. The three articles that conclude this two-part feature address the new legislation and offer suggestions for physical educators to successfully implement their school’s wellness policy.
