Just Evaluation Systems in Competitive Sport
Peter F. Hager & Cesar R. Torres
Abstract:
Although most physical education and interscholastic athletic programs emphasize the importance of skill development and execution, many choose to adopt a “winner-take-all” approach when it comes to recognizing and rewarding performance in sport competition. The elite-style evaluation systems reward contestants only on the basis of outcome, fail to recognize the levels and types of excellence both winners and losers attain, and do not do justice to the intricate stories that develop during sporting contests. This article discusses how evaluation systems can more fairly assess and compensate the excellence displayed in competitive sport, and how more just evaluation systems can benefit physical educators, coaches, administrators, and those they serve.
