Maximizing Peak Running on Race Day
Kitty Consolo
Abstract:
Months of distance training may be negated by mistakes a runner makes on race day. There are five common mistakes that runners make on race day: (1) failure to bring proper equipment to the race, (2) failure to eat an appropriate race-day meal, (3) failure to hydrate properly, (4) failure to warm up properly, and (5) failure to maintain proper pace. This article describes how coaches and athletes can minimize these race-day mistakes in order to achieve peak performance. This article is for coaches who train high school and college distance runners for races between 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
