Publishing Guidelines for JOPERD Departments

Research Works

Brief (500-650 words) abstracts of research are published in each issue of JOPERD. Abstracts must be of research articles published in refereed HPERD journals within the past year. They should follow the Research Works structure and include the complete citation. The research results should be applicable to practitioners (i.e., the abstracts should help readers stay current with scientific information that can be applied on the job). Send your abstract and the full text of the source paper to John Todorovich. 

Teaching Tips

The Teaching Tips department is geared to the HPERD teaching professional. It gives field practitioners the opportunity to share their ideas and to learn from others about teaching ideas that really work. The JOPERD Editorial Board encourages members who are actively involved in teaching at any level to submit their successful teaching ideas. Submit your manuscript (no more than six double-spaced pages) to Ferman Konukman.

Technology Tips

Technology Tips keeps the membership informed on the latest technology-based devices (hardware and software) and their uses in the fields of physical education, recreation, and dance. Are you using technology to facilitate your work or the learning of your students? If the answer is "yes," then the editor of Technology Tips encourages you to submit an article to JOPERD for the department. Technology Tips focuses on the practical uses of technology, including: reviews of pertinent software, methods for including technology in the instructional program, uses of technology for the professional, new devices (such as eMates, MessagePads, heart monitors) and how to use them in one or more of our related subject areas. Submit your manuscript (no more than six double-spaced pages)to Derrick Mears.

Law Review

Articles on topics of legal concern to the PERD profession. To submit, contact Tom Sawyer (thomas.sawyer@indstate.edu) or call him at (812)237-2645.

Issues

Issues is an open forum in which readers have the opportunity to respond to a question regarding HPERD. Brief (150-200 words) responses are encouraged. Responses will be edited to fit the allotted space.

Letters

Letters, published on space-available basis and selected by the editor, should speak (pro/con) on an issue or article previously published, on a professional issue of concern to larger numbers of professionals, or on a personal reflection. Letters may be submitted to joperd@aahperd.org

Conferences, Conventions, Workshops

Follow guidelines as for Update. For styles, see conference and workshops section in JOPERD. Deadline is two months prior to issue in which item is to be published.

Book Listing

New books that would interest HPERD professionals are listed in selected issues of JOPERD.

News

JOPERD publishes news and information of interest to stimulate thought and action by HPERD professionals on all educational levels. JOPERD acknowledges news contributors by name and institution. News content consists of:

• Trends in exercise, physical education programs, certification, school/community program, faculty development: cite source of study (author, address, publication, etc.)
• Brief summaries and descriptive articles that have implications for HPERD professionals published in a source many may not normally see. For example, statistics, sport and consumer safety, environmental concerns, legislation, demographics, and educational studies.
• Programs—Activity of multidisciplinary programs in universities, schools, communities in which HPERD plays a significant role. For example, new ways to involve community members at high school level, an effective pro-physical education media blitz, an interview with the athletic director which speaks to new training, academic standards, athlete selection, or program emphasis. A different twist to a legislative fitness day. Graduation requirement changes, school or division changes in the university, new courses and options in elementary and secondary levels.
• Technology—Adaptations of existing computer programs or newly developed programs colleagues can use in athletic contests, facility monitoring, grading, testing; uses for video and audio recording; cable TV programs and public access use; new uses for old equipment; media resources.
• People—Quotes from significant lecture or talk by leader in profession.
• Legislation—New state laws affecting graduation, certification, course and credit hours. Implications for HPERD nationally. Title IX, education acts, health and safety.
• Media and PR—Public service announcements (PSAs), how they were developed, by whom, and why they worked. Tips on effective press releases from a school district media consultant.
• Studies that show what students like/want or don't like/don't want in physical education classes at high school or college levels, what we (Americans, Ohioans, Midwesterners, etc.) do to keep fit, feel about holistic health and wellness, get from corporate fitness programs, do to train fitness professionals in private sector, think about athletics and academics, lifestyle, off-street coaches, pay for play.
