School-based Physical Activity Programs
Jim Stiehl & Christine Galvan
Abstract:
Some communities already offer an array of school-based extracurricular and community-based programs involving sports, music, art, and community service; however, this is far from the norm. Factors such as low availability, high cost, no means of transportation, and lack of interest limit many youths’ choices outside of school hours. This article highlights a school-based physical activity approach to providing positive growth experiences to middle school youths and typifies a number of programs that use physical activity to tap children’s developmental potential.
