Standards and Practice for K-12 Physical Education in Japan
Takashi Nakai & Michael W. Metzler

Abstract:
Since World War II, the national curriculum for Japanese schools has been revised approximately once every 10 years by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology. The last revision, which occurred in 1998, aimed to reduce the curriculum content and time allocated to each subject in order to implement a five-day school week and to meet new social needs for education. Standards for physical education are expressed as content standards, which are divided into different “strands,” each representing a cluster of physical activities. The curriculum at each grade level consists of a combination of compulsory strands and some additional strands that the students select. Physical education in Japan is viewed as a very important aspect of school life; it is not only considered a subject, but also as a part of the whole educational plan.
