Abstract:
Health and physical education are expected to improve the wellness of children and youths. Unfortunately, many health and physical educators may not be fully prepared to meet the challenge of providing high quality, standards-based programs that produce tangible results. In view of the current standards and policies and the important role that health and physical education play in schools, there is clearly a need for ongoing professional development. This article describes how the West Virginia Health and Physical Education Leadership Academy is providing professional development for inservice educators in order to improve the quality of health and physical education programming in the state.
