Using Target Heart-Rate Zones in Your Class
Jennie A. Gilbert

Abstract:
New research and a new heart-rate max formula mean that educators must teach their students new calculations. What is the appropriate use of these numbers for children? There are some inherent difficulties in estimating maximal heart rate using either the traditional or new heart-rate max formulae, and in subsequently calculating an exercise heart rate as a marker of training intensity in children. The purpose of this article is to review current activity guidelines for children, provide basic information as to why it is inappropriate to use training heart-rate zones in prepubescent children, suggest a grade level when target heart-rate zones may be appropriate, and to present the new HR max formula to calculate target heart rate.
