Using Teacher Work Samples to Develop and Assess Best Practices in Physical Education Teacher Education
Mary Jo Sariscsany
Abstract: Teacher work samples (TWS) are an integrated, comprehensive assessment tool that can be used as evidence of a beginning teacher’s readiness to teach. Unlike linear assessments used to determine teaching effectiveness, TWS are relevant and reflective of “real” teaching. They are designed to exhibit a clear relationship among teacher candidate planning, instruction, and assessment. Teacher work samples include a consideration of the situational context, evidence of student-learning outcomes, and opportunities for reflection. This article describes how the use of TWS can promote teacher candidate learning and lead to appropriate modifications of a candidate’s strengths and weaknesses.
