Walking to School: Taking Research to Practice
Kate A. Heelan, Scott A. Unruh, H. Jason Combs, Joseph E. Donnelly, Sarah Sutton, & Bryce M. Abbey
Abstract:
Walking to and from school, once nearly ubiquitous, is now uncommon, although it has the potential to increase the daily physical activity levels of children. This article explores the benefits of walking to and from school, parental perceived barriers, and predictors of active commuting among elementary school students. It also describes the outcomes of a Walking School Bus intervention and how to operate a successful program. Many resources are available for starting and implementing a Walking School Bus program, and neighborhood schools with an interest in increasing children’s daily physical activity levels by targeting health-enhancing habitual routines should consider putting one into place.
