“Why Did You Cut Me?” Preparing Coaching Education Students for the Team Selection Process
Lynn E. Couturier
Abstract: The team selection process is often a difficult one for coaches and athletes. Coaching educators need to prepare their students for the potential problems they may face when they take on this important task. This article emphasizes the importance of planning and communicating at each stage of the process. Since students are not in a position to select a team with actual players, discussion questions, scenarios, and simulations are recommended as methods to prepare students for the process. These activities expand students’ perspective on the challenge of team selection and can help them to develop an effective, fair, and sensitive method for the team selection process.
