Celebrating the Modern History of Health Education in AAHPERD
Becky J. Smith
Abstract: Health education became a formal part of the Alliance in both structure and name in 1937, which makes what is now the American Association for Health Education (AAHE) the oldest and the largest professional association for health education practitioners, researchers, and academics in the nation. In 1987, AAHE celebrated 50 years of health education in AAHPERD with the publication of "Fifty Years of Health Education in AAHPERD: A Chronology, 1937-1987." This article focuses primarily on the years from 1974 through 2010. It describes the mission, purpose, and organizational functioning of AAHE, as well as its history of success, recognition and award programs, research and publications, current initiatives, and goals for the future.
