Voices of the Alaskan Alutiiq Cultural Reawakening

Abstract: On a visit to the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage, the author learned about a small native group, the Alutiiq, that was experiencing a cultural reawakening. The author and documentary filmmaker Robert Prince collaborated on a project to make a film about Alutiiq dance, art, and culture. This article is based on the resulting documentary film, Finding Their Own Dance: Reawakening the Alaskan Alutiiq Arts. It includes a brief history of the Alutiiq people, describes the cultural reawakening, and the style of native dance that has resulted.
