The Mobile Gymnasium: Using Tablet PCs in Physical Education
Klara Gubacs-Collins & Susana Juniu

Abstract: Physical educators teaching in a gymnasium need mobile technology that supports the gathering and dissemination of information in a variety of formats and that can adapt to different settings, allowing freedom of movement. Notebook PCs and personal digital assistants (PDAs) are examples of common types of mobile technology, but they lack the capacity for interactivity and spontaneity. The newest notebook version—the tablet PC—has benefited teachers by facilitating (1) digital note-taking, (2) annotation of presentation materials, and (3) mark-up of students' assignments. Research shows that using a tablet PC and creating learning activities that require visual tools can develop critical-thinking skills and support visual learning. This article discusses how a tablet PC can make a significant difference in the classroom and the gymnasium by creating opportunities for active learning, interaction, collaboration, and increased student engagement. The article describes how a tablet PC works, how it compares to notebook PCs and PDAs, and how to use it in the classroom.
