Evidence-based Practice in Adapted Physical Education
Jooyeon Jin & Joonkoo Yun
Abstract: Although implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) has been strongly advocated by federal legislation as well as school districts in recent years, the concept has not been well accepted in adapted physical education (APE), perhaps due to a lack of understanding of the central notion of EBP. The purpose of this article is to discuss how APE teachers can implement EBP in their teaching environments. In this article, EBP is defined as the best practice of integrating individual teaching strategies with the best available evidence to meet students’ special needs in physical education settings. The three-way process for successfully implementing EBP includes: (1) creating evidence using appropriate research design to answer practical questions, (2) disseminating appropriate evidence to practitioners by a third-party organization and training future practitioners and current physical education teachers, and (3) implementing EBP in a five-step process.
