Implementing a Four-Phase Curriculum Review Model
Nancy LaCursia
Abstract: This article describes how to implement the four-phase curriculum review model, a simplified process for renovating a high school health and physical education curriculum. Although this model was used at a large suburban high school, it could be adapted for use by smaller schools or other disciplines. The four phases of this model are: (1) needs assessment, (2) philosophy and goals, (3) curriculum product, and (4) implementation/ evaluation. Each phase provides the basis for subsequent phase development. Keys to completing the model include teacher buy-in, communication, parent involvement, and administrative support. Challenges to completing the four phases include lack of time, expertise, and commitment by teachers to complete tasks.
