Is My Teaching Disturbing You? Strategies for Addressing Disruptive Behaviors in the College Classroom

Abstract: Faculty in higher education are experiencing a new generation of college students referred to as Generation X (Gen-Xers) and Millennials. The characteristics and behaviors of Gen-Xers and Millennials have created a more challenging classroom learning environment. Some educators may choose to ignore disruptive behaviors or may simply not know which classroom management strategies will work or which ones will backfire. This article offers effective teaching tools and recommendations that can help novice and experienced teachers to develop new class management strategies to address disruptive behaviors. This article presents elements of excellence in effective teachers, the anatomy of a teaching episode, and successful strategies to address disruptive behaviors.
