Kelle Murphy

Abstract: Faculty  in higher education are experiencing a new generation of college students  referred to as Generation X (Gen-Xers) and Millennials. The characteristics and  behaviors of Gen-Xers and Millennials have created a more challenging classroom  learning environment. Some educators may choose to ignore disruptive behaviors or  may simply not know which classroom management strategies will work or which  ones will backfire. This article offers effective teaching tools and  recommendations that can help novice and experienced teachers to develop new class  management strategies to address disruptive behaviors. This article presents  elements of excellence in effective teachers, the anatomy of a teaching episode,  and successful strategies to address disruptive behaviors.
