Strategies for Developing a University-Sponsored Youth Sports Summer Camp
David Walsh
Abstract: During the summer, universities have the ability to offer on-campus camps that serve the health, physical activity, and educational needs of youths. However, the tasks, responsibilities, time, and knowledge needed to run a camp can be overwhelming. This article describes the administrative components of the lessons learned from the development of a four-year, self-sufficient, fee-based, physical activity and sports summer camp for 7- to 14-year-old girls and boys. Recommendations for designing and implementing a successful summer camp address (1) meeting the university's tripartite mission, (2) navigating university bureaucracy, (3) organizing and implementing a marketing strategy, (4) hiring and managing employees, and (5) developing risk management and safety policies.
