Student-Authored Case Studies as a Learning Tool in Physical Education Teacher Education
K. Andrew Richards, Michael A. Hemphill, Thomas J. Templin, & Andrew M. Eubank

Abstract: In order to prepare undergraduate students better for the realities of school life, instructors of some methods courses have started to use case studies for teaching. These cases are used to highlight the complexity and variability of the educational environment. This method of teaching, which has its roots in business, law, and medicine, has become increasingly popular in teacher preparation contexts, including physical education teacher preparation (PETE) programs. This article describes the benefits and challenges of having students write their own case studies, and it provides recommendations based on the authors' own experience using student-written case studies in a PETE junior seminar course.
