Using the School Nurse to Support Your Elementary Physical Education Program
Mary L. Kozub & Francis M. Kozub
Abstract: The school nurse is an often unrecognized but valuable asset to the educational team. The role of the school nurse has expanded beyond the traditional tasks of medication administration and injury treatment. Today, he or she can provide educational support, collaborate with teaching staff in the development of educational policies, coordinate health-promotion and safety activities, and serve as a liaison with school personnel, families, the community, and medical personnel. This article describes how the physical educator and the school nurse can form a collaborative relationship that supports the objectives of a quality physical education program, while supporting the nurse's goal of promoting health and safety among students.
