2012 RC Conference Program Highlights

Come, meet, and network with researchers presenting over 300 peer-reviewed papers at the AAHPERD National Convention and Exposition in Boston, MA, March 13–17, 2012. Sessions have again been scheduled using a thematic approach for oral and poster sessions. Plan to attend as many of these sessions as possible, as researchers from across disciplines share their findings on similar topics and populations.

The Research Consortium program will begin Wednesday morning, March 14, and the R. Tait McKenzie Memorial Lecture will be held that evening, featuring Kenneth H. Copper, Cooper Clinic, Dallas, TX, speaking on "The Texas Youth Evaluation Project," Wednesday, March 14, at 7:00 p.m.

Other featured Research Consortium Distinguished Lectures include the:

  • 33rd Annual C. H. McCloy Lecture and Breakfast, given by R. Scott Kretchmar, The Pennsylvania State University, on "Symbols, Conventions, Games, and the Evolution of Human Intelligence." This is a special ticketed event held on Thursday, March 15, at 7:15 a.m.;
  • 21st Annual Raymond A. Weiss Lecture, given by Mary Jo Kane, University of Minnesota, on "Media Representations of Female Athletes—The Good, the Bad, and the Sexy," Wednesday, March 14, at 1:45 p.m.;
  • 7th Annual RQES Lecture, given by Weimo Zhu, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, on the "Science and Art of Setting Standards (Cutoff Scores) in Kinesiology" Thursday, March 15, at 4:30 p.m.

EDA/Research Consortium Day: Special to this year's program, the Research Consortium has partnered with the Research Council of the Eastern District AAHPERD to schedule a half-day of programming on Saturday, March 17. Two interactive panel discussions will be held followed by the 2012 EDA Research Keynote as follows:

  • 8:45am – 10:00am Panel Discussion: Performing Action Research in Physical Education
  • 10:15am – 11:30am Panel Discussion: Evidence Based Research in Physical Activity Program Details 11:45am – 12:45pm
  • EDA Research Keynote: The "Clumsiness" Connection: Using Movement to Help Identify Learning Disabilities, Nancy Getchell, University of Delaware

The 2012 program will also include research symposia and tutorials, as well as a 5th annual student work-in-progress poster session, co-sponsored by the national associations of AAHPERD.

Convention attendees are also invited to the annual Research Consortium Poster Social on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., and all Research Consortium members are encouraged to attend the Research Consortium Business Meeting on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

ANNOUNCING: The 2012 Research Consortium Abstracts, generally published as a supplement to the March issue of RQES, will be posted online only and will be open access. Once posted in early March, a link to the issue will be posted as a news announcement on the AAHPERD/RC Web site.
