FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Physical Activity Research Grants Awarded to Young Investigators

The Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) named 5 recipients as winners of its 2010 Early Career Investigator and Graduate Student awards through the AAHPERD Research Grant Program, which funds original research in health, physical education, sport, recreation and/or dance.

"We are proud of this group of outstanding young investigators" said Research Consortium President Catherine D. Ennis, of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. "We are pleased to contribute to their research agendas, while also furthering the mission of the AAHPERD Research Consortium to advance and disseminate research in physical activity and health."

Awards are given through a two-stage highly competitive process open to members of the Research Consortium. The 2010 Early Career Investigator recipients are: Dr. Jeffrey S. Gehris, Temple University; Dr. Kevin Patton, California State University-Chico; Dr. Matthew Walker, University of Florida; and Dr. Collin A. Webster, University of South Carolina. The 2010 Graduate Student Grant recipient is Xiangli Gu, Louisiana State University.

Early Career Investigator winner, Webster of the University of South Carolina, said he was grateful for the investment in his research. He stated, "I am thrilled with the Research Consortium's support of my investigation, which I believe will make an important contribution to our understanding of factors related to teachers' promotion of school-based physical activity. The grant program provides an ideal mechanism to support studies such as mine, at an early phase in a developing research program."

The AAHPERD Research Consortium has awarded over $500,000 to primary investigators' institutions through the AAHPERD Research Grant program, since its inception in 1998. The Research Consortium is comprised of 5,000 research scholars and other members of the AAHPERD's Associations who have a strong interest in research and in applying research results in their schools and community physical activity programs. The Consortium serves as the coordinating organization within AAHPERD in support of research across the disciplines and the professions served by AAHPERD.
