PEP Awards Announced for FY 2012!

On July 31, the U.S. Department of Education awarded 56 grants totaling $27 million to school districts and community organizations who plan to implement comprehensive physical fitness and nutrition programs for their students through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP). Since the program began in 2001, the department has awarded more than $620 million in funding to expand and improve physical and nutrition education programs across the country for students in kindergarten through high school.

PEP was funded at $78.7 million for FY 2012.  Since PEP grants are funded over a three-year cycle, each year the school districts and community organizations that are in year two and year three of their grant cycles are funded first.  Then the Department of Education uses the remaining money to fund new grants.

Tell your Congressmen to continue to support the PEP grant and to fund it in the FY 2013 budget!

Elementary and Secondary Education Act Update

Both the U.S. Senate and House have passed ESEA reauthorization bills through their respective education committees.  Next steps will require each chamber to hold a floor vote on the bills.  Then a conference committee will be appointed with members from each chamber to come to a consensus on education policy for the nation.

Senate ESEA reauthorization includes a well-rounded education fund that includes potential funding for physical education and health education as well as nine other subject areas.  It also eliminates many existing grant programs, including PEP, but establishes the Successful, Safe and Healthy Students grant program, under which states may fund physical activity/fitness/nutrition programs. Conditions for learning indicators include physical education standards requirements and reporting of quality physical education minutes.

The House ESEA bills are not as friendly to physical education and health education.  There is no mention of either subject in the House bills.

Learn more about ESEA and the reauthorization bills that have been introduced by the Senate and the House to date.

Click here to send a message to your Senators and Representatives continuing to urge them to include PE and HE in ESEA reauthorization.

Congress Passes Transportation Bill - Cuts to Biking and Walking Funding

On June 29, Congress passed a transportation bill worth over $100 billion.  Within the bill, biking and walking programs were consolidated and received dramatically reduced funding.  Additionally, dedicated funding for Safe Routes to School was eliminated.  For information about what you can do to continue to advocate for biking, walking, and Safe Routes to School please visit the Safe Routes to School National Partnership website.
