One of the important activities that AAHPERD does is recognize and celebrate the outstanding work of its members through a multitude of awards. With the unification vote has come a huge reorganization task for AAHPERD and a chance to review and improve all our functions. In the area of awards President Gale Wiedow designated an ad hoc committee of leaders from each of the former structures (Associations and Research Consortium) to decide on awards to be given by the unified AAHPERD at the 2014 convention in St. Louis.
Given the short timeline before awards announcements needed to be posted so that the nomination process could take place, the committee agreed to designate existing awards to be given in 2014 and those that would need to be put on hold for a year until more of the structure of AAHERD was determined and appropriate award selection committees could be designated. Reorganizing awards or identifying appropriate selection committees in light of the reorganization will take some time and it was decided a more complete review of individual awards will take place in the coming year.
Criteria used for choosing awards to be included at the 2014 St. Louis convention included 1) centrality to mission of the unified AAHPERD; 2) priority from the former Association/RC; 3) clarity of nomination criteria/process; and 4) number of previous nominations. Additionally, we expanded the criteria for some awards such as the Hall of Fame Award to include all discipline areas of the unified AAHPERD. We are excited about the opportunity to honor members with the awards to be presented in 2014 and look forward to having the time and proper attention to reorganize awards placed on hold this year as the unified AAHPERD structure and strategic plan is developed and put in place.
We know there will be some disappointment that some awards from the substructures/interest groups were put on hold for this year. We look forward to the coming year and the chance to match the award process with the new AAHPERD.
